Obesity In America

 Obesity In America

Being overweight increases the risk of health conditions & diseases including:
Breast cancer
Coronary heart disease
Type II diabetes
Sleep apnea
Gallbladder disease
Osteoarthritis
Colon cancer
Hypertension
Stroke

Contributing factors to the obesity epidemic
Many of America’s favorite foods, including hamburgers, french fries, and doughnuts, are high in carbohydrates content. These foods are relatively easy to make and many are deep fried.
As American families have become absorbed with other activities, formal meal time disappeared, leading to increased snacking all day without a nutritional meal.

Over the last several decades, many factors have converged:
A reduction in the amount of exercise we get (especially children)
Sedentary jobs
The elimination or reduction of P.E. in schools
The explosion of entertainment options that keep us indoors
Growing safety issues for children that keep them from being outdoors
A change in our diets that includes an increase in the number of dietary calories
Lifestyle changes that have led to more dining outside the home.

If obesity rates continue on their current path, the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke, hypertension and arthritis could increase 10 times between 2010 and 2020—and double again by 2030.

USA Obesity Rates Reach Epidemic Proportions!

We know a lot more about how to prevent obesity than we did 10 years ago. Like increasing physical activity, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking more water. Small changes can add up to a big difference.

Prevent weight gain by choosing smaller food portions, fewer snacks, and healthier meals.
It also helps to be physically active and to monitor weight status with regular weighing.

Studies have shown that between 75 and 150 minutes of weekly exercise is all it takes to gain important health benefits
