How to tell if your body is getting enough water

A straightforward way to determine if you’re getting enough water is to look at your urine’s color. Typically, urine should be a clear or pale-yellow color. If your urine appears dark yellow, brown, or amber, it may be a sign you need to drink more water. 

Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, a state in which the body does not have enough water to carry out its normal functions. Usually, you can manage mild-to-moderate dehydration by just drinking more water. 

Here are some signs of mild-to-moderate dehydration — and they are your body’s way of telling you that you need to drink more water: 

  • Dark or strong-smelling urine
  • Dry mouth 
  • Thirst
  • Headaches 
  • Less frequent urination 
  • Muscle cramps
